Celebrating 65 Years of Zest, Joy, and Bubbles with Lisa Dearden

To Lisa—thank you for trusting me all those years ago and for continuing to invite me to capture your vibrant, unstoppable spirit. You are a light, a leader, and a kid at heart—and we all need more of that in our lives.

Some people come into your life and leave a lasting sparkle—Lisa Dearden is one of those people.

I’ve had the joy of photographing Lisa for many years, and she’s been a client since the very beginning—back when my first photo studio was in my bedroom. That’s right, I was doing whatever it took to build my business from the ground up, and Lisa believed in me even then.

So when she reached out to celebrate her 65th birthday, I was deeply honored to be part of such a meaningful milestone.

Lisa has always had a zest for life and a heart rooted in community. As the owner of ChiknEGG, she’s been a fierce advocate for local agriculture and a champion of Richmond’s farmer's markets. Her impact on the community is nothing short of inspiring. But this session wasn’t about her many accolades—it was about Lisa, the radiant soul who continues to embrace life with curiosity, courage, and a playful spirit.

Dressing up and Bubbles always bring out the fun and kid at heart!

We met at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden on a perfect spring day, when the flowers were in full bloom and the air was thick with possibility. Lisa brought along a bubble machine (yes, you read that right!), and we set up in the Children’s Garden, surrounded by the laughter of one toddler, colorful toys, and whimsical delight.

Lisa didn’t hold back as bubbles floated around us—she played, laughed, and even climbed a tree afterwards! Her energy was electric. Her joy was contagious. Her message was loud and clear: Age doesn’t define me. I define me.

One quote kept coming to mind as I photographed her:

“Aging is not ‘lost youth’ but a new stage of opportunity and strength.” — Betty Friedan

What I love most about milestone portrait sessions like this one is that they honor who we are right now—not who we used to be, or who society expects us to be, but the bold, beautiful, authentic version of ourselves today.

Before we wrapped up, I asked Lisa what she would want someone in their mid-50s to know about turning 65. She smiled and said:

“Keep working out.”

Lisa is dreaming about her fun days ahead in retirement!

She wasn’t joking—Lisa is an avid hiker, and she hits the gym regularly. It’s a big part of how she stays strong, balanced, and vibrant. Her dedication to movement and wellness is a beautiful reminder that the way we treat our bodies today shapes the freedom we feel tomorrow.

Lisa reminded me that growing older is a gift, and when we embrace it with intention, movement, and joy, we shine even brighter.
